Pop Warner — The Foundation of Long Island Youth Football
Pop Warner is the largest and oldest youth football organization in the world, and it's the backbone of youth tackle football on Long Island. Pop Warner is also the only youth football organization that requires academic standards for participation — players must maintain passing grades to be eligible to play, which sets it apart from other youth sports programs.

Equipment Requirements and Costs
Youth tackle football requires more equipment than any other youth sport. Most Long Island Pop Warner chapters provide helmets, shoulder pads, and practice jerseys — players keep their game jerseys. Families are responsible for football pants, cleats, a mouth guard, and an athletic cup. Budget $75–150 for your out-of-pocket equipment costs per season.
Safety: What's Changed in Youth Football
Pop Warner implemented significant safety rule changes over the past decade. Kickoffs have been modified, full-speed blocking is prohibited in practice more than a third of the time, and heads-up tackling is now mandatory. Helmet technology has improved dramatically. Long Island Pop Warner chapters are required to follow all national safety protocols.
Concussion protocol: Any player showing signs of a concussion must be immediately removed from play and cannot return without written medical clearance. This is strictly enforced at all Pop Warner events. If a program you're evaluating doesn't take this seriously, walk away.
NCYFL: Long Island's Travel Football League
The Nassau County Youth Football League (NCYFL) is Long Island's primary competitive youth tackle football organization. Programs like Wantagh Football Club, Massapequa Chiefs, and Oceanside Sailors compete in NCYFL with full fall seasons, playoffs, and end-of-season championship games.
