Field Hockey on Long Island — A Growing Force

Field hockey is one of the fastest-growing sports on Long Island among girls. LIFHA registered 56 travel teams in 2025 across multiple grade levels and has awarded over $48,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors who started in its junior program. Remarkably, five of the six teams that represented Long Island at the 2024 Varsity Championships began their careers in LIFHA's junior program.

How LIFHA Works

The Long Island Field Hockey Association (LIFHA) is the primary governing body for youth travel field hockey on Long Island. Programs run September through November (fall season) with a spring season component for some age groups. Teams are organized by grade level, and LIFHA hosts an annual opening playday at Adelphi University that's a great introduction to competitive play.

Getting Started: The CYO Entry Point

CYO Long Island partners with Sacred Heart Academy and Dynasty FHC to offer field hockey clinics for girls in grades 3–8. This is an excellent low-barrier entry point — clinics run in the fall, equipment is minimal, and the instruction is provided by the Sacred Heart Academy varsity coaching staff.

The Club Pathway: From LIFHA to College

After a season or two of LIFHA play, skilled players typically join club programs like Long Island Field Hockey Inc. (USA Field Hockey powered), Dynasty FHC, or one of the town-based clubs (Manhasset, Garden City, Northport, Smithtown, Commack, Half Hollow Hills). These clubs compete in regional tournaments and have direct connections to college coaches who recruit from Long Island's strong field hockey pipeline.

Recruiting reality: Long Island field hockey has exceptional college placement rates. Garden City, Manhasset, Northport, and Half Hollow Hills are perennial sources of Division I college recruits. Starting in LIFHA by 4th–5th grade and joining a quality club by 7th grade puts players in the recruiting conversation by 9th–10th grade.
