Long Island's Swimming Legacy

The Long Island Aquatic Club (LIAC) is one of the most decorated USA Swimming clubs in the country, having produced Olympic swimmers and national champions. Long Island's pool infrastructure — indoor facilities at YMCAs, community centers, and private clubs across Nassau and Suffolk — supports one of the strongest youth swimming ecosystems in the Northeast.

Understanding Swim Meets

Swim meets are unlike any other youth sports competition. Your child swims 1–4 events per meet, each lasting 20–120 seconds. The goal is beating your own personal best time (PR), not just winning. Meets typically run 6–9 hours — bring food, patience, and a warm jacket for the pool deck.

What Competitive Swimming Actually Costs

USA Swimming club membership on Long Island runs $1,200–$3,500 per year for most age group programs. LIAC's elite programs are higher. YMCA recreational team swimming is significantly less expensive and a great starting point. Factor in goggles ($15–40), suits ($30–150), swim bags, and meet entry fees when budgeting.

The two-a-day reality: Elite competitive swimmers at LIAC and comparable programs often practice twice a day (5:30am + afternoon) by age 14. This is not typical until the Senior level — most age group programs practice 5–8 hours per week. Ask any club about their practice schedule before committing.
