Long Island's Unique Tennis Heritage
The Port Washington Tennis Academy — now SPORTIME Port Washington — is the birthplace of American tennis greatness. John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, Vitas Gerulaitis, and Tracy Austin all trained here. That legacy is alive today through the John McEnroe Tennis Academy (JMTA), which operates at SPORTIME Syosset and Port Washington.
Understanding the USTA Junior Tennis Pathway

|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 10 & Under Tennis | 5–10 | Smaller courts, foam balls, fun-first approach |
| Development | Junior Team Tennis | 8–18 | Team format, local match play |
| Competitive | USTA Tournaments | 10–18 | Sanctioned singles/doubles events |
| Elite | JMTA / National rankings | 12–18 | Full-time academy training |
The Three Stages of Junior Tennis Development
Stage 1: Learning the Game (Ages 5–10)
Focus entirely on fun, coordination, and falling in love with the sport. The USTA's 10 & Under Tennis format uses modified equipment — foam and red/orange/green balls — on smaller courts. Look for programs at SPORTIME, SCJTL, or your local parks department.
Stage 2: Building Skills (Ages 10–14)
This is where technical foundations get locked in. Weekly private lessons paired with group clinics is the gold standard. Eastern Athletic, Nassau Indoor Tennis, and Generation Next Tennis in Great Neck are all excellent at this stage. Your child should play in at least a few USTA junior tournaments each year to start understanding match play pressure.
Stage 3: Competing Seriously (Ages 14–18)
If your child is ranked in New York State or nationally, JMTA at SPORTIME Syosset or Port Washington becomes the clear option. Generation Next Tennis has produced 90+ NCAA players over the years. This stage requires a serious time commitment — 10–15 hours per week of on-court training is typical for ranked players.
Cost reality: Serious competitive junior tennis on Long Island costs $5,000–$20,000+ per year when you factor in lessons, clinics, tournament fees, travel, and equipment. Make sure your child is driving the ambition before making that investment.
Finding the Right Program for Your Child's Level
For beginners and recreational players, SCJTL (Suffolk County Junior Tennis League) and town parks programs offer affordable access. For competitive players, SPORTIME's multiple Nassau County locations and Eastern Athletic's Suffolk County facilities are the best options on the island.
