The Most Accessible Youth Sport on Long Island
Track and field requires less specialized equipment than almost any other youth sport. A pair of running shoes is enough to start. Long Island's strong high school track tradition — Nassau and Suffolk County consistently produce All-Americans — is built on a foundation of youth club programs, CYO leagues, and PAL track programs that welcome kids starting at age 8.

USATF Junior Olympic Program
The USATF Junior Olympic track and field program runs from local club championships through regional and national competitions. Long Island youth clubs including the Massapequa Track Club, Huntington Track Club, and Island Track Club compete in the USATF Niagara Association (which covers New York State). The national Junior Olympic Championships are held each August.
CYO Track on Long Island
CYO Long Island runs one of the most active youth track programs on the island through Catholic parish programs. Spring season, accessible entry fee, and a welcoming environment for first-time competitors. CYO track is often the first competitive track experience for Long Island youth athletes and feeds directly into high school programs.
Multi-sport note: Track and field is the perfect complementary sport for soccer, lacrosse, football, and basketball players. Off-season speed and agility development through track training directly improves performance in every other sport. Many LI coaches specifically encourage their players to run track in the spring.
