How Youth Volleyball Works on Long Island

Unlike most youth sports on Long Island that follow a fall outdoor / winter indoor pattern, volleyball is primarily an indoor winter/spring sport with club programs running November through June. School volleyball is a fall sport for girls. Understanding this dual-season structure is key to planning your child's volleyball year.

The Club Volleyball Recruiting Timeline

9U–12U: Development focus. Learn serve, pass, set, hit fundamentals. No pressure on recruiting.

13U–14U: Transition year. Skills mature, positional identity emerges. Coaches start tracking standout players.

15U–16U: College coaches begin watching. Tournament attendance at USAV qualifiers matters here.

17U–18U: Recruiting decisions. Official visits, verbal commitments, and scholarship offers happen in this window.

Key stat: Only about 4% of high school volleyball players go on to play in college. If recruiting is the goal, choosing a high-visibility club program by 15U is critical — college coaches recruit almost entirely from club showcases, not high school matches.
