Two Very Different Sports Under One Name

When parents say "cheerleading" they might mean completely different things. Sideline cheer is attached to a football team and focuses on crowd engagement, performance, and school spirit. All-star competitive cheer is a standalone sport where teams compete on a spring floor with no football involvement — it's judged on tumbling, stunting, pyramids, and performance quality. Both exist on Long Island, and they attract very different athletes.

Sideline Cheer Programs on Long Island

Most sideline cheer programs are affiliated with youth football organizations. Pop Warner chapters, PAL football programs, and independent tackle football clubs (Massapequa Chiefs, Smithtown Bulls, Huntington Eagles, LI Sound Sharks) all have affiliated cheer squads. Season runs September–November, practice 2–3 times per week, no prior experience needed for younger age groups.

What All-Star Cheer Actually Costs on Long Island

All-star competitive cheer is expensive. Budget $1,500–$4,000 per year for program fees, uniforms, competition entry fees, choreography, music, and travel. Level 4–5 programs competing at national events can run $5,000+ annually. Make sure your child is genuinely passionate about the sport before making this investment.

The tumbling factor: Almost all competitive cheer programs on Long Island require athletes to demonstrate basic tumbling skills (at minimum a cartwheel and roundoff) before joining. Gold Medal Gymnastics Centers and Apex Athletics offer cheer-specific tumbling classes that prepare kids for all-star programs.
