Complete Guide
What is U8 Youth Sports?
U8 means 'Under 8' — players must be under 8 years old (typically by April 30 of the season year). U8 programs on Long Island serve kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade.
At U8, games introduce real sport rules at a reduced scale. Soccer uses 7v7 or 5v5 with small goals. Baseball introduces coach-pitch or machine-pitch (no T-ball). Lacrosse introduces real sticks and passing. Basketball lowers the basket to 8 ft.
Most U8 programs run in spring (March–June) and fall (September–November). Ice hockey U8 runs on a different schedule tied to rink availability — typically September through March.
