Field hockey is a rapidly growing sport on Long Island with LIFHA registering 56 travel teams across multiple grade levels in 2025. LIFHA has awarded over $48,000 in college scholarships and five of six 2024 LI Varsity Championship teams began their careers in LIFHA's junior program. LIFHA (Long Island Field Hockey Association) is the governing body for youth field hockey on Long Island, running travel leagues and coordinating club competition across Nassau and Suffolk County. LIFHA feeds into Long Island's nationally ranked high school programs.
The primary season is fall (August–November) aligned with the high school season. LIFHA runs a spring club season as well. Summer camps and training begin in July.
Recreational LIFHA programs cost $200–$500. Club travel field hockey runs $500–$1,500 per year. Equipment (stick, goggles, shin guards, mouthguard) costs $100–$250.
Players need a field hockey stick (31–36 inches depending on height), goggles, shin guards, a mouthguard, turf shoes or cleats, and an athletic skirt or shorts. Goalies need significantly more protective equipment.
Long Island has one of the most competitive high school field hockey landscapes in the country. Nassau County has historically produced 5 of 6 state championship schools. LIFHA's strong development pipeline contributes to this excellence.
